The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal food assistance program that helps low-income families buy food they need for their household. SNAP, formerly called food stamps, is open to all eligible individuals and households that apply. In NC, the program is called Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).
SNAP/FNS benefits are distributed monthly using an Electronics Benefit Transfer Card (EBT). The card is used like a debit card, and is accepted at many grocery stores, discount shops, and farmers’ markets. Click here to find SNAP/FNS retailers in your community.
